Offline Learning – 1 star challenge

Offline Learning – 2 star challenge

Phase 6 Phonics and Spelling Lesson - Video Lesson with Mrs Haines

Remember you don’t need to complete everything – do what works best for you and your family. My suggestion is a couple of home learning tasks each school day with plenty of breaks for fun and games in between, try and do some Maths and English each day and then some of the other subjects or activities throughout the week too. If you are using the online lessons please stick to either Oak Academy or Bitesize for your English or Maths for the whole week, it will be very confusing if you do English on one site some days and on a different site the others! 1 star challenges will be slightly easier and 2 star challenges will be a little more tricky, please try the 2 star challenges unless I have already asked you to try the 1 star challenges.

I love seeing pictures of what you have been doing so please do keep sending me them. I will be calling everyone on Wednesday this week so I look forward to speaking to you all then. If you have any questions, need help with any of the work or need some additional work just send me an email and I will do my best to help.

I hope everyone has a good week, that we all stay healthy and happy and that we can make the most of the situation we are all in.

Lots of love,

Mrs Haines xxx

Update from Mrs Haines 27.04.2020

Happy Monday Year 2

As we start a new week of working from home I hope that everyone is keeping well and happy. This week I have organised a timetable of online learning and a set of offline learning activities. Parents you can either choose to complete the online learning or the offline activities, you do not need to do both although if you wish to of course you can. If completing the online lessons it would be great if pupils could complete a Maths and English lesson each day and then 2 topic lessons during the week, but please don’t worry if you can’t get all of that done. The links on the timetable will take you directly to the right lesson on the Oak National Academy website and to the right section of BBC Bitesize. Please stick to one website for each subject for the whole week. I’ve split them into   or   challenges so that you can pick the right level of challenge for the stage of your child’s learning.  Offline activities are to be completed throughout the week.

Online Learning Timetable

Offline Learning Activities

Miss Jones will be giving all families a quick call on Tuesday to check in and have a little chat with the children, again this will be from a withheld number. Miss Jones can’t wait to speak to everyone. I will be checking my emails each day and look forward to seeing more pictures of you all working hard

I hope you all have a calm and happy week.

Lots of love,

Mrs Haines xxx

Update from Mrs Haines 20.04.2020

Dear Year 2 families,

I hope that you all had a restful Easter and enjoyed time together as a family eating far too much chocolate! Today marks the start of Summer Term, and although it isn’t the term we were all hoping for I am pleased that we are in this journey together and that we are able to keep in touch. I will be checking emails every school day so please do get in touch if there is anything that I can help with or to share picture of what you have been up to at home together. I haven’t seen the children for nearly 5 weeks now and I am missing them terribly so I really do love the emails, pictures and video messages that I receive from you all.

Today two new platforms have launched to help with home learning

https://www.thenational.academy/online-classroom/schedule/#schedule

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/dailylessons

We are asking all pupils to try and complete at least a Maths and English lesson from one of these two sites each week day whenever this is manageable for your family. You will receive an email later today to inform you of which lessons would be best suited to your child’s stage of learning. There are also some great foundation lessons covering things like Science, Art, History, Geography etc and it would be great if you could aim to complete at least one or two of these each week too (both sites have a Maths, English and Foundation lesson for each day and if you would like to complete a Foundation lesson each day too then that would be great but you don’t have to!) I would love to see photos of work that you have completed and would like to share with me via email (year2@gloucesterroad.gloucs.sch.uk), please don’t feel you have to send in pictures of work but if you’d like to I really do love seeing them.

Please use this guide to help navigate the BBC Bitesize website and this guide to help navigate the Oak Academy website.

You will need to stick to using either Oak Hill or Bitesize for each subject for an entire week as the lessons build on each other. For example you might choose to do the following:

Monday

Tuesday

Wednesday

Thursday

Friday

English from Oak Hill

English from Oak Hill

English from Oak Hill

English from Oak Hill

English from Oak Hill

Maths from Bitesize

Maths from Bitesize

Maths from Bitesize

Maths from Bitesize

Maths from Bitesize

History from Bitesize

Foundation (Science) from Oak Hill

Foundation (Art) from Oak Hill

Some of the Bitesize lessons need you to print worksheets off from the links in the lesson, if you don’t have a printer I would stick to the Oak Hill lessons as all of the lessons on their site that I have checked so far don’t need you to print anything off. My suggestion would be to complete one online lesson and the do an activity away from the screen for 30-60 minutes before starting the next online lesson. This could be a play based activity or one of the offline tasks listed on our year 2 page of the school website.

In addition to Maths and English lesson each week day, the children still need to carry on with daily reading and practising their times tables and number facts as much as possible. Children will continue to have access to Times Tables Rockstars/Numbots, Spelling Shed, Maths Shed, Typing Club, Purple Mash and Sumdog. I have set up challenges for the children on Spelling Shed, Maths Shed and Sumdog however these are not compulsory and are only there should you wish to use them.

I understand that many of you will be trying to juggle working from home alongside running a household and homeschooling your child or children, and that this is a really difficult thing to do. There are going to be days when no homeschooling happens and that is OK. We are all trying to navigate a really challenging time and while I want to provide you with learning opportunities for your children while I can’t teach them in school myself, I don’t want anyone to feel under any pressure or make these times any more challenging than they already are. If you feel there is anything I can do to support you in these strange times please do contact me and let me know, especially if you are struggling to access online learning due to lack of internet or devices and I will see how we can best help in school to still provide learning opportunities for your child.

I hope that everyone is keeping safe, well and staying home.

Lots of Love,

Mrs Haines xxx

Update from Mrs Haines 31.03.2020

Hello wonderful year 2!

Remember that this week we are all trying to draw an Easter chick and write an Easter poem - don't forget to send your finished drawings and poems to me at year2@gloucesterroad.gloucs.sch.uk I will share your work on our class twitter page www.twitter.com/year2grps so that you can all see what your friends have done too. Spelling and Maths activities are set up for you on play.edshed.com which will last until Sunday. I've already seen some great pictures of people having a go at some of the off-line activities that I have suggested below - keep sending me pictures of what you have been doing, I love seeing them.

I've just found some great scripts and songs you can download for free to put on your own mini musical at home, if you fancy getting theatrical and putting on a little show for your families click here. Perhaps you can film them and send them to me so I can watch too?

Daily songs to sing can be found here, singing is great for our mental wellbeing!

I hope that you are all having a good week, keeping safe and staying at home.

I miss you all!

Love from Mrs Haines x

Update from Mrs Haines

Good afternoon my lovely class,

I'm missing you all so much! I've been completing Joe Wicks' daily workouts and now I have very achey legs - if you fancy giving the workouts a go you can find them here on youtube. I'm half way through my first book which has been really good so far, I hope you are all enjoying a good book too. I've seen lots of you working hard on some of our online platforms. If you complete any activities that you would like to share with me you can ask a grown up to tweet our class page on twitter. Our class page can be found at https://twitter.com/year2grps it is an open page which can be seen by anyone so parents please don't upload pictures of any other pupils without their parent's permission. Mrs Platt and I have set ourselves a challenge of drawing a picture each day, yesterday we drew monsters! I'll put mine up on our class twitter page so you can see it.

I hope everyone is keeping safe and well.

Lots of love,

Mrs Haines xxx

A Message from Mrs Haines during school closure

My lovely year 2s,

I know that it must seem strange for school to be closed to most of you from Monday, I want you to know that I will miss teaching you all every day and I will be thinking of you and your families lots. While we are away from school I hope that you will have lots of fun at home and that you will keep yourselves safe. Try to read as much as you can - I know that I'm going to try and read as many books as possible! I wonder who can read the most during the closure?  I'm going to put some i

website. Keep going on TTRS and Numbots too, I'm going to switch you all over to training mode so that it will automatically introduce the next time table once you reach the goal speed for one!

I hope that I will get to see you all soon!

Lots of love,

Mrs Haines

To get in touch email year2@gloucesterroad.gloucs.sch.uk

deas of activities and links to sites that I think you might enjoy while you're at home - I will put these up over the next few days. There are also lots of ideas on the Home Learning Page of this

Year 2 Homework

Numbots and Times Table Rock Stars

Children will be given a login and password to access both Numbots and TTRS at home. At the start of Year 2 children will only be asked to use Numbots to help improve their recall of number facts and mental addition and subtraction skills, when Mrs Haines feels they are ready she will ask them to use TTRS instead to start learning their multiplication and division facts. By the end of year 2 children need to know all multiplication and division facts for their 2, 5 and 10 times tables.

Reading in Year 2

Your child will be given a book and a reading diary to bring home. They need to read their book twice with an adult and be able to retell the story before bringing it in to swap for another book. Their reading record needs to be signed by an adult and an adult or the child needs to comment on the book.

Spellings in Year 2

Here is an overview of the Year 2 spellings. Children should also be able to spell the 45 Year 2 Common Exception Words.
