Physical Education
At Gloucester Road Nursery and Primary School we follow the Getset4PE PE Scheme of Work for our Physical Education curriculum and the Primary National Curriculum for Physical Education in England at Key Stage 1 and 2.
We also work closely with Move More, a Gloucestershire sports specialist charity who support primary schools through organising high-quality competitions, delivering expert sports teaching and providing development opportunities for staff.
Over the last few years, our school has been very pleased to receive awards in the School Games Award!

Sport Premium Funding
The government is providing additional funding to improve provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. This funding - provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport - will be allocated to primary school head teachers.
This funding is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on improving the provision of PE and sport in schools.
Please have a look at the documents below to find out how Gloucester Road has spent the PE and Sports funding to benefit the whole school.
These are working documents and are updated regularly.

sports committee
Mr Collins meets with our Sports Committee on a fortnightly basis and their role is to improve PE and sport in our school and raise the profile of sport amongst the school community. The children love getting together to share their ideas and we have really enjoyed their assemblies and competitions.
SWIMMing
Swimming is the only sport to be included within the national curriculum physical education programme of study. All primary schools must provide swimming and water safety lessons in either Key Stage 1 or 2.
Gloucester Road has chosen to provide swimming lessons for every KS2 class for one term each year. Additionally, we regularly work with the charity Heidi's Heroes to provide additional swimming opportunities for children in Year 5 who are at risk of not achieving the end of KS2 expectations for swimming.
By the end of KS2, each pupil is required to be able to do the following:
- Perform safe self-rescue in different water based situations
- Swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
- Use a range of strokes effectively, for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke.
Please find a summary of our KS2 swimming data from the last few years here.
PE and sport school updates
Parents and families will be able to see updates on Seesaw about what their class are doing in their PE lessons. You can also find out what unit they are covering on the class' project map each term.
School sports updates will be added to the School Newsletter which is produced on a weekly basis.
We also have a Sports Notice Board in the hall where our Sports Committee post updates of school PE events and local and national festivals and tournaments.
after-school clubs
Each term, we provide a range of after-school sports and games clubs for our pupils. These change each term to ensure we offer a variety of opportunities and are delivered by a mixture of school staff and external specialist sports coaches.
Please contact Mr Penny, the PE Subject Leader, or the school office, or consult your Edulink account, for more details.
