Black History Month
The month presents an opportunity for children and young people to learn more about Black history and to celebrate the contributions Black people have made to society.
It has shone a light on how we at Gloucester Road approach acts of racism.
We are committed to promoting race equality and delivering anti-racist education. To be a truly anti-racist school, anti-racist framing must permeate all areas of school life.
With this in mind, we have begun to formulate an Equality and Diversity Pledge. We have dedicated a web page to this, link to page can be found below. Equality and Diversity PledgeWe are also reviewing our Equality Information and Objectives Statement and policy with the Governing Body. In order to comply with the Public Sector Equality Duty (PSED), schools must publish their equality information and objectives statement – a declaration of aims that ensures equality for all members of the school’s community.
You can find these documents here (once published):
Our school community is diverse, for which we are really proud and aim to celebrate. We endeavour to do this by using our diversity to influence all decisions made, such as class names to represent the nationalities of many of the pupils in attendance at Gloucester Road. Our DEEP and EARLY curriculum projects are intentionally selected to teach pupils about equality and diversity, such as the first focus in our EARLY curriculum is to learn about Festivals and Cultures, The Windrush project studied in Year 2 and the Suffragettes and Slavery projects studied in Year 6. Our PEACE group patrons are intentionally representative of diversity and equality. The Literacy Tree writing programme that guides our teaching of writing chooses a range of texts with diversity in mind, further information about their thoughts behind choosing texts can be found here: Lliteracytree.com/thinking-deeply-about-diversity-when-choosing-books
We also explicitly teach about racism using additional Curriculum Coverage resources from: https://www.antiracism.education/ and https://www.theredcard.org/
We have composed an Anti Racism Policy that works alongside our Behaviour and Anti Bullying Policies for when incidents may occur.
