At Gloucester Road Primary School we empower our children with a ‘CAN DO’ attitude, embracing our school motto – ‘I CAN DO IT.’ We encourage children to develop their knowledge and understanding of foreign languages, and aim for all pupils to enjoy modern foreign languages and become confident language users. We teach Polish to pupils at Key Stage 2 following the Primary National Curriculum for Languages in England.
“Learning a foreign language is a liberation from insularity and provides an opening to other cultures. A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It should also provide opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and read great literature in the original language. Language teaching should provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries..”
National curriculum 2012 - MFL
Through the launch of our DEEP curriculum in September 2016, we have decided that the children will learn one language, at greater depth. In order to achieve this, we have decided to have a mother-tongue Polish teacher to teach the classes so that the children will hear and interact with a good language model. The reason Polish was chosen as a language, is because language is all about communication and Polish is the second most spoken language in the UK and in our school. Our children will be able to practise their language skills with their mother-tongue peers and our Polish speaking children will strengthen their vocabulary, grammar and writing skills.
